EVSE Load Calculator

CSA C22.1:24 (2024 Canadian Electrical Code) load calculations for electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). Table 38 has been deleted in the 2024 Code; EVSE demand factor is now 100% for all applications unless an EVEMS is installed.

2024 Code Change: Table 38 (EVSE demand factors) has been deleted in CSA C22.1:24. EVSE loads shall now be assumed to have a 100% demand factor in all applications (Rules 8-200, 8-202, 8-204, 8-206, 8-208, 8-210), unless an EVEMS (Electric Vehicle Energy Management System) is installed per Rule 8-106 10) or 11). This means conductor and overcurrent sizing may need to be upsized for multiple EVSE installations in condos and commercial buildings.

How It Works

CSA C22.1:24 (2024 Code): Table 38 has been deleted. EVSE loads shall be assumed to have a 100% demand factor in all applications (Rules 8-200, 8-202, 8-204, 8-206, 8-208, 8-210). This means the full connected load of all EVSE on a feeder or service must be accounted for without any demand reduction. Conductor and overcurrent sizing may need to be upsized accordingly when installing multiple EVSE in multi-unit residential or commercial buildings.

EVEMS Exception (Rule 8-106 10)/11): Where an Electric Vehicle Energy Management System monitors the consumer's service, feeders, and branch circuits AND controls EVSE loads in accordance with Rule 8-500, the EVSE demand load shall not be required to be considered in the calculated load. This allows more chargers to be installed on existing infrastructure by actively managing load sharing and preventing overloading.

CSA C22.1:21 (2021 Code, historical): Table 38 provided demand factors based on the number of charging spaces per feeder and the maximum load per space. Factors ranged from 100% (1-4 spaces) down to 70% (25+ spaces at 8000W+ per stall). Single dwellings (Rule 8-200) always used 100%. This table is no longer in effect in the 2024 Code.

Service current = Total Demand (W) ÷ System Voltage. Standard breaker sizes: 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 125, 150, 175, 200, 225, 250, 300, 350, 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000 A. Round up to next standard size.
